Use the real execution identity

Interactive administrator tests do not prove that a Windows service running as LocalSystem or another account can reach SQL Server and the destination.

Database access

Grant the minimum SQL Server permissions needed for the chosen backup workflow. Avoid using sysadmin merely to bypass configuration work.

Filesystem access

The service identity needs appropriate rights to create, read and manage backup files in approved locations. UNC destinations require deliberate network identity and share permissions.

Test the complete path

  • Discover the instance.
  • Enumerate approved databases.
  • Create a test backup.
  • Read and verify the file.
  • Confirm retention cleanup.
